How skin is built
Most skin concerns start in one of three layers.
Knowing which layer a problem sits in explains why some fade with creams and others need energy that reaches deeper.
Epidermis, the outer layer
A thin, renewing surface. Pigment cells sit at its base, so tan, dark spots and much of melasma begin here.
Dermis, the support layer
Collagen, elastic fibres, blood vessels, oil glands and hair follicles. Acne, scars, lines, open pores and hair fall start here.
Fat layer and deeper support
Cushions and shapes the face. As it and the tissue around it change with age, skin can look looser.
