What makes skin look dull
Healthy skin looks bright because its surface is smooth and well hydrated, so it reflects light evenly, and because the tone underneath is even. Skin looks dull when the surface becomes rough or dry, when old cells pile up, or when tan and patches of pigment break up the tone. Tiredness, smoking and illness reduce blood flow to the skin and add a grey, tired look.

- Old, dry cells pile up and roughen the surface.
- A rough surface scatters light, so skin looks flat and dull.
- A smooth, hydrated surface reflects light evenly, which reads as glow.
What’s behind your dull skin?
Dead-cell build-up
- Signs
- Rough texture, make-up that sits unevenly, blackheads, a slightly grey look.
- Why it happens
- Skin sheds more slowly with age, oiliness and some products, so old cells collect on the surface.
- What helps
- Gentle chemical exfoliants or a retinoid at home; medi-facials and light peels in the clinic.
Dehydration
- Signs
- Tightness after washing, fine lines that look worse in the afternoon, flaking.
- Why it happens
- A damaged skin barrier from harsh cleansers, hot water, scrubs, air-conditioning or dry winter air.
- What helps
- Gentle cleanser, moisturiser with ceramides or hyaluronic acid, and skin boosters for deeper hydration.
Tan & uneven tone
- Signs
- Darker exposed areas, patches, and marks after pimples.
- Why it happens
- Sun exposure and inflammation stimulate extra pigment, especially in brown skin.
- What helps
- Daily sunscreen, brightening creams, peels and laser toning.
Lifestyle
- Signs
- A tired, sallow look, dark circles and slow-healing spots.
- Why it happens
- Poor sleep, smoking, stress, illness and very restrictive diets affect blood flow and repair.
- What helps
- Sleep, not smoking, a balanced diet, and checking for problems such as low iron or thyroid issues if you also feel unwell.
Illustrations, not to scale. Dullness usually has more than one cause, so the best plan combines a few simple steps.
A routine that brings back glow
- Morning: gentle cleanser, an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C if you like, moisturiser and a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or more.
- Evening: cleanse, then a retinoid or a gentle exfoliating acid on some nights, and moisturiser.
- Avoid: harsh scrubs and parlour bleach; they damage the barrier and can cause pigmentation.
- Patience: skin renews over about a month, so give a new routine six to eight weeks.
When to see a dermatologist
See a dermatologist if dullness comes with patches of pigmentation, acne or marks, sensitivity or redness, or if a good routine hasn’t helped after a couple of months. Dull skin can also come with general health problems, so mention tiredness, weight changes or hair fall.
