Wedding skin is planned, not rushed. Most skin treatments work over weeks to months, so the earlier you start, the calmer the last fortnight will be. Here is a dermatologist’s countdown you can adapt.
Six months or more before
This is the ideal time to start anything that needs a course:
- See a dermatologist for a skin assessment: acne, marks, pigmentation, dullness, unwanted hair.
- Start laser hair removal: a course takes several sessions spread over months. See laser hair removal on Indian skin.
- Treat active acne properly, so it is controlled well before the day and has time to stop leaving marks.
- Start on pigmentation and melasma: these respond slowly and need a patient, gentle approach.
- Begin a simple home routine: gentle cleanser, moisturiser, daily sunscreen and one targeted active.
Three months before
- Continue your treatment plan; this is when peels, laser toning or medi-facials add polish, spaced a few weeks apart.
- If you are considering anti-wrinkle injections or fillers, have a first session now so any adjustment can be made in time.
- Lock in your routine. No new products from here unless your doctor suggests them.
- Look after the basics: sleep, water, a balanced diet, and less sugar and dairy if they seem to trigger your breakouts.
One month before
- Final sessions of courses such as laser toning or peels.
- Trial your make-up with your make-up artist, ideally on a day when you can see how your skin reacts.
- Body care: gentle exfoliation for rough elbows and knees, a rich moisturiser, sunscreen on exposed areas.
- Final laser hair removal session, if timed to finish around now.
The last two weeks
The golden rule: nothing new.
- No new products, no new facials, no new treatments.
- No waxing or threading in the final few days if your skin reacts to it; schedule it earlier.
- Hair colour at least a week or two before, after the pack’s skin test, and pure henna only for mehndi: dark “instant” mehndi often contains PPD, a common cause of allergic reactions. See hair dye and black mehndi allergy.
- A gentle medi-facial or light peel you have had before can be done about five to seven days before. See hydra facial and medi-facials.
- Sunscreen every day, even during functions.
- Sleep. It shows.
The week of the wedding
- Keep the routine boring.
- Remove make-up gently every night, however late.
- Moisturise well; long days of make-up and air-conditioning dry the skin.
- If a pimple appears, do not squeeze it. Ask your dermatologist, who can often calm it quickly.
For grooms too
The same timeline works for grooms: treat acne and marks early, consider beard-line laser hair removal for razor bumps, and keep sunscreen and a simple routine going. See men’s skincare.
